Palazzo Amici is located at number 19 in Piazzale Flaminio, the space between Piazza del Popolo, Via Flaminia and the propylaea of the monumental entrance to Villa Borghese. It is also the crossroads between Via Luisa di Savoia leading towards the Lungotevere and Via del Muro Torto, one of the city’s most important arteries.
It has always been a junction of passage and exchange: today home to restaurants and offices, it was once the place where farmers could sell their produce without paying duty, as tributes were paid at the gateway that opened along the Aurelian Walls.
The building affected by the restoration work is located on the opposite side of Porta del Popolo, on the corner with Via Flaminia.
Vivenda’s work on Palazzo Amici was carried out with respect for the ‘minimum intervention’, to avoid compromising the ‘text’ in its documentary value: invasive removal and reintegration operations were excluded.
Prior to Vivenda’s action, the building was subject to widespread surface deposition affecting all architectural surfaces. Problems of erosion and decay of the paint film were found, caused by crystallisation of salts, biological attack, acid rain and repeated thermal cycles that generally subject the material to mechanical stress.
The restoration work involved all the structural, architectural and decorative elements affected by deterioration caused by the action of time. All the damaged plastered areas were recovered through cleaning and consolidation, while the damaged parts were replaced. The work was concluded with brushing, lime painting and painting of all the plastered surfaces.
In addition, all the degraded parts of the stringcourse cornices, main cornice and windows were restored and missing parts were reconstructed, and a waterproofing layer was applied to the roof covering.
All this made it possible to restore the building to its original appearance.
